Default Garnffrwd fishing well

Despite the cold weather, Garnffrwd is fishing well with most of the rainbows averaging just over 3lb at the moment, might be worth a visit as the water is gin clear as always and a few monster brown trout between 10-16lb have been spotted.

Here's a couple of the fish I have landed recently.

I hope sometime we could maybe organise a forum social here as it is a cracking fishery and plenty of accommodation too!

Give me a shout Chris and I'll join you for a few hours, especially now as I have a Zippo handwarmer for my poorly circulated hands.

Hey Stu, a good tip I have been using the last 4 weeks is to put on a pair of latex gloves (like doctors ones) and they have been perfect! They are super thin so you can feel the line and they insulate your hands, I haven't lost the feeling in my fingers at all! Had some strange looks mind you though

I may try and squeeze in a day between xmas and new year, but if I can't I will definately have a day between new year and the 8th of Jan as a practice for the colin miller memorial cup - you may fancy it yourself??

Would be great at some point next year to try and organise a social though!!

Chris

imo, my friends went there within the last year once the weed almost covered the whole lake only 2-3 inches of water left in some places, another time they entered a comp there and left half way through as water was chocolate brown.Another gentleman i know had the venue for his local club for the day and all they caught was a few browns which they had to return and 2/3 rainbows, this is what i have heard and anglers must realise all venues have bad spells.

Of course TT every lake goes through different spells, but even if you take the time to read this;

CategoriesChris New Blog - Fly Fishing in Wales

Which is a link to my blog which I have written over the last 4 months nearly on a weekly or even daily basis, the quality of the fishing should speak for itself!

And another thing to mention is Garnffrwd is not an easy place to just walk onto and catch a sack full. You may get lucky and turn up one day when some fish have just been stocked and get a few fairly quickly but thats just it - luck!

I try to fish it at least once a week if not more just to keep up with what the fish are doing as I meet alot of people fishing the lake for hours before finding out where the fish are and what they want.

That doesn't sound like a bad day to me. Did they mention that the browns and rainbows have full tails and fight extremely hard? As Welshy says it isn't the easiest place at times but if we wanted easy we'd go to a hole in the ground filled with newly stocked pellet pigs surely? I've never seen it chocolate brown but it does for a few weeks a year suffer from some sort of algae that greens up the water a bit. The fish are still able to be caught though even in those conditions. Maybe your friends were just unlucky with their timing.

Aye for just a couple of weeks a year it gets an algal bloom, but it doesnt seem to affect the fishing.

Naturals, and small ones at that, seem to do very well here; dries and emergers, buzzers and small nymphs.....but then again the odd bloke pulling a zonker or a blob can have the occasional stormer.

Ive not fished there/or anywhere for a couple of months, but as soon as I get the opportunity to wet a line that's where Im headed.

Ive never seen it brown, its spring fed....I can only imagine that it was the result of freakishly high rainfall coming off the fields....

Presentation at this venue is the key, thin diameter fluro, but no lighter than 5lbs - those belligerent burgers punch well above their weight.

Highly recommended.

Sounds like my kind of venue, may have to take a trip down there next week (providing the weather isn't too harsh)

The 2 or 3 rainbows were between over a dozen of them,so i would say it was a bad day but you do get bad days,i myself have seen the weed sticking out of the water and the water in between the two long platforms unfishable.
This is not critisism mainly a observation.

Had a great day fishing here today, water was clear, fish were not rising much but were up for a bit of a chase early on (3 fish in 3 casts during a purple 10 mins)....a bit more picky later....I picked the last fish up on an okeydokey.

I managed 8 rainbows, most on a small olive hare's ear damsel with a little marabou tail, the last one was particularly uncooperative.

there were those who had more success....Andy had 12 with 4 brownies.

That's my whack till January that is.
