Default im looking for a beginners fishery nr e.lothian

Hello folks i need your help urgently please.

my best mate is coming to stay at the weekend and he is wanting to go fly fishing, the problem is he never catches although good at casting and this really affects his confidence. I play down the fact that he never catches when we go out however i know it gets to him.

I know that there are never any guarantees of catching a fish when fishing but could someone recommend me somewhere to take him where he may have a reasonable chance to land a fish (or at least hook one!) to boost his confidence.

I stay in east lothian and wouldn't mind driving up to an hour if need be to get him somewhere. I'd prefer this to be a still-water rather than a river as my tackle is more geared toward this.

Cheers

(p.s. this mate does exist and its not me i promise )

Whilst it's not for me, Markle fishery at East Linton may be the place nearest to you. Another place is Rosslynlee in Midlothian, but as i've never fished it and put & take rainbows aren't really my thing I can't comment much. I did notice that 'Scottpix' posted a picture of some good looking fish from it so it may be worth a go.

Hi there,Rosslynlee is a well stocked and well run fishery.I regularly travel from Ayrshire to fish it and have done for the last 5 or 6 years. You`ll be best to phone and book it if going at weekend.I think they only let about 25 rods on.Its about 5 acres with good platforms,a dam wall or a couple of boats to fish from. You could also try Bangour or Allandale Tarn.If you want something bigger Loganlea is well worth going to,its about 20 acres.Boat or bank fishing, though bank fishing can be challenging with the high banks, telephone wires and hillwalkers adding to the fun!!! I would give Bangour at Livingston a try. It would also be an idea to book.

Default fishery

Hi,

Markle or Tweeddale near Gifford are your best bets probably.

At Markle, you can also hire a rod set up if your mate doesn't have tackle. Just ask Jimmy in the shop what it's been fishing like and he will keep you right with current fly choice etc for the conditions. Both fisheries above have plenty of space to accomodate busy days.

Rosslynlee is a cracking wee fishery but is very busy at weekends and space is at a premium. Well worth a visit though and the quality of the trout is superb.

You could travel a wee bit further up to Peebles and try Kailzie fishery. A small water regularly stocked. At this time of year at Kailzie, fish a Green Montana on an intermediate and your mate is almost gauranteed fish.

Cheers

Rosslynlee can be a bit of a pain for wind, especially if you don`t get a well placed platform.Loganlea suffers a bit as well depending on direction of wind. Personaly i quite like both when windy.

Like what the others say Rosslynlee can be a bit windy, but I suppose that`s like most fisheries in Scotland, mind you we do seem to have had a hell of a lot of wind this year.
Like today on the opening day of the season I popped down to my local river The Water of Leith, a total waste of time, branches getting blown off trees and the water a chocolate brown, a raging torrent more suited to water rafting.

Seriously though Rosslynlee is worth a go plenty of good quality fish, not that hard to catch, yellow dancer is the fly for this water, an other option is booking a boat.

You cant go wrong mate, all the best.

Scott
