Peter Hesketh's auld dug was scrambling around in bushes when it stopped to drink from a natural spring. Peter went in after the mutt and discovered the spring which was developed into Moffat Fishery all those years ago. I recall Peter (then a college lecturer) relaying the story with more than a hint of a tear in his eye as he talked about the old dug. From there on we called him 'Dry Yer Eyes.'

Arguably things were never the same after Peter sold up the fishery, and since then it has re-opened on a more than a handful of occasions.

Peter now runs the Ae Fishery near Parkgate after the tragic death of his colleague and friend, Rob Mackie

Thats interesting about the spring being found. When was that then. When SEAN OTTEWELL had it , it was the best small water in SCOTLAND. Grown on belters and really well run. It seems that since the other add ons like the garden, shop and other interests has been like a millstone round its neck. I was told that the monthly comp for this weekend has been cancelled and its goin into recievership. Very sad.

I couldn't even hazard a guess how long ago that was but I would reckon possibly a year or two before the fishery first opened?

I think Peter and Sean ran the place together?

I recall Peter displaying a slide show one day, showing the auld dug beside the spring, and pics of the fishery in development. Very interesting as I remember.

Any idea why things are not working out down there? They say there's a park, shop and other amenities there now, do you think this has dragged the current owners down? Are the anglers just not coming to the area any longer?

Always sad to see any small business closing down but especially one which was once so popular and so well managed. I know it has closed down a few times before, was there not an environmental health issue down there a few years back too?

I think there's too much potential there for it to be closed for good mind you. These places are always in demand.

Without going into too much detail - isn't there an inheritance issue?
Haven't the family who owned it also sold the estate up Annanwater?

Feel free to PM me. I really can't discuss it on open forum.
