Thought I would take the time to compile a wee report about my first outing of the 2008 season.
I quite often pop up to Clubbiedean throughout the year as it is literally 10 minutes from where I live in the Southwest of Edinburgh.
So,I'll drop in from time to time to make updates on the fishing....
Today was overcast all day with a cold 7-10 mph easterly, water temp was 5.5 degrees C and the air felt even colder...
I set up with a Hi-D and a pair of small boobies spaced 8 feet apart....white/green on the dropper with a black with fluo yellow painted eyes on the point. My partner for the day was my good mate Stewarty, who is the bailiff at Clubbiedean...he started off with a team of three pullers on the slime line....gold head damsel, hares ear palmer and a mini black cat.
The wind direction gave us a nice drift down the length of the reservoir,so we chose the north bank as it is generally shallower than the south shoreline, with more features for the fish to lie on.
Half way down the drift near the white sign post, there is a shallow bank which usually holds fish throughout the season.Predictably it was here that I hooked the first of the day, a lively splashy wee stocky... followed next cast by something much stronger and faster....turned out to be a nice wintered fish of around 2.5lb or so.It was a lovely fish, honestly ...the fish generally winter well here and are in sparkling nick.
It was well worth a snap but you'll have to take my word for it because I managed to drop my new Canon Powershot A570 straight into the freezing cold water before i could even get the fish lined up in the frame.....
However we were in the margins at that point and the water was only about three foot deep so I fished it out with the landing net and thankfully managed to salvage the few shots I took of the boats from the memory card....but the camera is toast......naw.... really...!!!
Stewarty thought it was hilarious and was rolling around in tears of laughter....while I gave myself 100 mental boots up the **** for being such a careless dick-ead.....
Anyway on with the fishing.....We carried on down the wind wondering if the fish were going to be piled up in the bay at the bottom of the wind.Indeed they were,....action was fast and furious for the both of us.We decided to switch over to floating line and nymphy stuff ,fished on the drop...GTS,flashback cove, diawls etc,... as it was clear that the fish were in the top 3-4 feet despite the cold conditions.
If anything this tactical change was even more to the fishes liking than the lures were.Mostly stockies but we had at least half a dozen cracking wintered fish among them and we had good steady fishing for 3-4 hours before frostbite finally got the better of us.
Hopefully next time ,I'll be able to post more foties of succesfull patterns, nice fish and drifts etc.
