Fly fishing turns on at Gailey.
It’s always strange predicting how the weather effects trout fishing, after some really good sport in December and January, February’s mini freeze had the fish hard on the bottom and the action was very slow, then March 1st arrives, and it’s like someone has turned on a switch, the large stocks of rainbow and blue trout have woke up and started to feed.
Despite gale force winds last weekend and many anglers delivering flowers and chocolates for mothers day, fishing was remarkably good for the brave soles who fished in to the cold wind, Len Beckley from Sedgley caught 7 fish including a lovely rainbow of just over 4 lbs, while season ticket holder John Care managed double figures including two over 4 lbs on a short line fishing nymphs in the the lodge corner. Gailey regular Peter Davies from Norton Canes landed 13 rainbow and blue trout in just a couple of hours fishing a Damsel nymph and black buzzer team.
Buzzers are starting to hatch as the weather warms up, so we should see surface feeding trout over the coming weeks, so have some red and black buzzers patterns in your fly boxes. Another fly, anglers should have when visiting Gailey is a selection of Damsel nymphs, both leaded and gold head and marabou tail versions.
