I fished Melvin for the first time yesterday and fell in love with the place,I started fishing at 10.30am and fished till 9.30 pm conditions were good although sometimes too bright .The wind was a WSW in the morning and a nice rolling wave.In the afternoon it had picked and there were white horses on the lough

,however the sonaghan seemed to prefer these conditions as the first 3 fish came to the boat during this time on Fiery Brown Frazzle Dabblers. We put into shore for a bite to eat and then returned to the deep water to fish for the sonaghan i managed another 3 in the deeper water on a Flame Orange Muddler ,my boat partner caught on Fiery Brown Frazzle Dabbler,Legs eleven, and daddies ,we had 10 trout and returned several undersize trout and saw a few large trout(5lb plus) leaping out of the water
i would love to have hooked one of them but the sonaghan fought like trout twice their size.
I am glad i went to Melvin with someone who has fished it for 20+ years for as a first time visitor it is a daunting place and the knowledge of my boat partner put us over fish in which is always a difficult month on the lough roll on my next visit.
