Default Meon Springs

Dear Colin,

On the Lakes.
With the recent rains, the lakes have coloured up a little. However, water levels in Whitewool and Coombe are now good.

Large Buzzers are king at the minute, black with green cheeks being top of the list.

This Weeks Fishing Tip

Strong winds, rain and storms
Many anglers will stay at home on windy and wet days, however some of the best fun can be had in these conditions - if you know how to fish them.

One of the main problems is that if you're right handed and the wind is coming over your right shoulder, your normal back cast will result in your hook catching you in the back of the head (painful). To avoid this, you can do one of three things.

1) Fish on the opposite bank, so that the fly is being blown away from you.

2) Cast from your left shoulder. To do this, simply bring your rod up and across your body to vertical - then deliver in the normal way. Simple but very effective....

3) If conditions are really bad, I would recommend a Roll Cast from your left shoulder. As in a normal Roll Cast, you lift the rod to just past vertical and flick it away, only this time off the left shoulder.

Next week, we will explain the easiest way ever to achieve the perfect Roll Cast....

Troutmasters
Ollie Newman - two fish, 6Lbs 8oz and 6Lbs 3oz. One out of Whitewool Lake and one out of Coombe Lake. Both to a stalking bug. Great fishing - well done.

Just an update on the above report, I had the unfortunate pleasure of being taken completely to school by Dad (Ollie) last weekend. He was absolutely on fire, managed to get a 6lb 8oz rainbow after some fairly patient stalking up on the top Coombe Lake, this fish was in absolutely mint condition and fought fantastically as well. Then an hour or so later managed to find and tempt a 6lb 2oz fish from the bigger Whitewool Lake, this fish was one of the prettiestly larked fish I have seen for ages (excusing the tail), spots right from top to bottom and a lovely deep colour as well.

In terms of the fishery in general, it was stacked with fish but the two that Dad had were probably the biggest we could spot in the crystal clear water. The fishing was very hard and I only managed one of about 3lb for a lot of fairly precise casting and my brother in law didn't hook up but his casting is coming along great.

The credit system that they operate is a great way of tempting beginners back.
