ANGLING REPORT FOR WEEK ENDING 19 AUGUST 2011

After the previous week's excellent fishing, the week end of 13/14 August was more disappointing with a lot of anglers struggling to catch fish in any numbers. Very few fish were showing on the surface yet when flies were fished deeper the trout still did not seem to want to play too much. Having said that, the anglers who were successful were getting nice bags but there was no common factor in fly depth or type. In fact one angler managed 7 returned on a dry fly sedge by fishing blind, whilst another had 6 returned on a small booby.
Once the week days started then the quality of the fishing jumped right up and excellent bags were being taken throughout the loch. The catch average for this part of the week ( including nil returns) ranged from 2.06 to an excellent 2.86 per rod. The average weight of rainbows killed continued at 2 lb 8 oz. Most anglers have been returning all the wild brown trout caught but any killed were coming in at 1lb - 2lb in weight.
All the usual boat areas were producing fish with the Craig's, Maitland's and the Lagoons being especially consistent. In the Bannock Bay it was a case of finding the section the fish were feeding in. Get that wrong and simply nothing was happening!
Bank anglers were probably doing best from the Old Boathouse down to Dam Corner but this is quite normal at this time of year.
As said earlier, the trout were taking a huge range of flies and the successful techniques varied dramatically.
The following anglers did especially well - Mr Elliot, Glasgow - 3 for 9 lb 11oz ( plus 5 returned); Mr Rae, Edinburgh - 9 returned; Mr McIntyre, Bathgate - 2 for 5 lb 5 oz (plus 6 returned); Mr Clark, Falkirk - 5 for 12 lb 5 oz; Mr Paterson, Livingstone - 6 for 15 lb 1 oz; Mr Millar, Stirling - 4 for 11 lb; Messrs Crossford and Blanley, Manchester - 11 returned; Mr Thomson, Perth - 4 returned; Mr Jack, Glasgow - 6 returned.
Our Catch & Release permit continues to be extremely popular. It only costs £10 per angler for bank fishing or a row boat. Outboards can be hired for an extra £10 per boat.
