Press Manor trout fishery near wingerworth, I take a lot of my clients up there for begginer courses so would be ideal for you to try.

Default Derbyshire Fisheries

Hi Keelin, heres a few others to be going on with

Foremark Reservoir nr Derby + loads of help and advice off staff
Carsington Water (reservoir) nr Ashbourne + as above
Alton Manor nr Wirksworth + left to get on with it but small stillwater/ponds

River fishing is 99% club waters in Derbyshire I'm afraid.

good luck

Mick

Keelin,
You could try Barlow, just outside chesterfield. It's quite beginner friendly. The fish aren't big, but there are 4 lakes to try so you've got plenty of options (and it's open all year round). It's also quite sheltered from the wind, so would be a good option on blustery days. Good luck.

Yes, it's open all year round, and doesn't usually get booked up. But don't just turn up - you do need to ring in advance.

It's a b***er to find the first time, off the A52 - although signposted pretty well when you get there. You go down a track at the side of the Horseshoe. Which was closed for a bit - if it has reopened could be worth checking out as it used to be great - open fire, good beer, decent food...

If you are a beginner, I would avoid the bigger waters as local knowledge is king and if you are fishing from the bank the fish will generally be too far out to reach or there will be no fish in the area at all. If you are planning to try from a boat, try and blag a day out with someone with a bit of experience. You will also get a free lesson in fishing and fishcraft.

I would try Barlow as there are 4 small ponds stuffed with fish and a beginner will be able to reach them, although they are not as stupid as you think. Press Manor is also very good but you will have to be able to cast a bit further unless you can get one of the boats. Both waters fish well to floating lines.
I've never fished Yeavely so cannot comment although the last time I enquired they did not do Catch & release.

This time of year is difficult as there will be very little surface activity so finding the fish will not be easy so stick to the smaller waters. At least you know there will be fish around near you somewhere. You will also be able to approach other anglers who are catching and ask them how things are, I've not met many people who are not forthcoming, particularly to beginners.

Good Luck

Iain
