Default New Fishery in Northumberland

Hi There,

A new small Stillwater has just opened this month in Northumberland.

It is very close to the village of Chatton which is not far from the small town of Wooler.
It is called Chatton Trout Fishery and it is around four to five acres in size and has some interesting features to its shape.

There is a comfortable Lodge with Coffee and Bacon Rolls etc available. The fishery is quite open but that gives excellent views out over the surrounding countryside including the Cheviots.

The fish quality is superb with most of the fish stocked back in June and July.

There is a limit of two flies to be used and no Large Lures, Boobies, Propellers, Flickers etc.
All flies must be Barbless or carefully De-Barbed.
Shouting and other disturbance is actively discouraged.

Bookings can be made on 01668 215 226 or 0796 6361 424

There are plans for another 2 or 3 more "lakes" and it is hoped to open these next year.

I believe that as the water eventually feeds into the River Till and then the Tweed that a Rod Licence is not required but you would have to confirm that with the owners.

I have fished it twice now and will certainly be going back especially as the rivers are out of sorts at the moment.

Best Regards

robbie

As regards rod licences, I think you will find you need a rod licence every where except Scotland, even if you own a fishery and stock it youself.

Hi There,

The rod licence issue is not that clear cut.

You do NOT need a rod licence to to fish in the River Till or any of its tributaries as it is part of the River Tweed System which is wholly classed as a Scottish river.

This is despite the fact that the Till and its Tributaries are all in England.
This also applies to the very lower part of the Tweed and to the lower part of the Whiteadder which are also in England.

The Chatton Fishery feeds into the Till and I beleive that the owners have been informed by the EA that a rod licence is not required in this instance.

I would stress however that this must be confirmed with the owners.

I also beleive that Connundrum Fishery near Berwick on Tweed is also exempt from a rod licensce requirement.

This fishery is not part of the Tweed system but its water supply originates in Scotland.

I would emphasise again though that these facts should be verified by anyone who wishes to fish these waters and does not have an EA licence.

Best Regards

robbie

I've always been under the impression that if you want to fish anywhere in England, even your own backyard, you need a rod licence.

Andy

ps Had mine checked at Toft Newton last Sunday which was good to see.

Very interesting Robbie, it would be great if this position could be clarified, maybe the fishery owners could be contacted to set matters straight.

Robbie if you check the back of a fishing licence it states that the licence allows you to use a rod and line but not to fish. Thats at the owners discretion. I think I'd get a licence just to be on the safe side.

Hi There,

Andy... I have an EA Licence and get one every year and have done for longer than I care to remember.

It is now on standing order......

You are right in saying you need a licence to fish in English Waters but you do not need a licence to fish in Scottish Waters.

You do not need a licence to fish in the River Till system in Northumberland as it is a Scottish Water.
It is a Scottish Water because it is a Tributary of the Tweed which is a Scottish Water.

This is an absolute fact and with twenty years in my Tackle Shop in Berwick on Tweed it is the sort of thing I do know.

The Chatton Fishery is part of the River Till system so it is reasonable to assume that you do not need a licence to fish it.
You of course do need a permit from the owner.

I have been told by a good friend of the owner of the fishery that he has been advised by the EA that his clients do not need a licence.
Although I am sure of this I was just being ultra cautious in asking every one to check for themselves.

The only reason I mentioned this issue is because a lot of the anglers that visit my shop fish exclusively in Scottish Waters and I knew they would not visit Chatton if they had to buy a licence.

I have e-mailed the owner and am awaiting his reply but I am fairly sure he will confirm what I have said.

I hope this clears the situation up for you.

Best Regards

robbie

Robbie is right - you do not need a rod licence to fish anywhere in the entire Tweed catchment, whether it is in England or Scotland. The 'Tweed Order' ensures that national Scottish and specific Tweed fishery law governs the whole of the river, for consistency.

The opposite happens on the Border Esk, where most of the river is in Scotland but it is governed by the english legislation (and the need to have a rod licence even if fishing in the Scottish part of the Border Esk).
