Default Farmoor first time

Visit to Farmoor yesterday in blustery conditions noticed that there were a handful of people braving the reservoir into the wind and the majority of anglers on the leeward side.
I only saw two fish moving on or near the surface during the day but saw quite a few being caught in the corner area up by the causeway - these were being caught mostly on static boobys.
This place is supposed to be where the "bung" method originated (yeah I know we have had a few postings on this subject which is why I choose the word supposed) and a further development has occurred which I haven't seen before in "fly-fishing". This is the use of a rod rest with a deep wedge to fit in between the concrete blocks to presumably hold the rod fast whilst fishing a booby. Not exactly fly fishing - purist style but seemed to be effective.
Blank for me unfortunately but my colleague managed to get one on the "last" cast and a beautiful one at that! The fish took a minkie around the weed bed 20' -30' out.
Nice day out and the wardens are very helpful there.

Wink Farmoor

Loopy,

Go and fish Farmoor in early May when the fish are hoovering buzzer. Fish a 5 or 6 weight floater, 20' leader and three buzzers - black or olive. Chuck it out 20 yards and fish it SLOWLY round. If you are moving it at all you are fishing too fast. Fish it right into the edge and I mean RIGHT in. No more than 3 feet of line outside the tip ring. The takes will come from five yards of line out to zero. Get it right on the right day and you'll be on your way home well before lunch!

Yeah, Farmoor is great when they are on the nymphs but, unfortunately, like a lot of bigger waters you cannot bank on that all year round.

This means trying a few other things when it is cold or bright. Right now I would expect an intermediate with a minky on the point and a blob on the dropper to be one approach and a Di7 with a couple of boobies on a six foot leader, fished on a slow figure 8 (not left in the rod rest, carp fishing style !) to be the other.

If the day is warm and not too windy, I think you would still catch a few on nymphs but you have to be prepared to go with the conditions on the day. In April, I fished the EYFA Charity Match there and went with a buzzer plan in mind, but a couple of casts in a howling N.Easterly convinced me to put that rod away and forget it. I caught all my fish that day on a cat booby, fishing into the wind.
