Default Roddlesworth

It was my first fly fishing trip today. My fishing buddy Tony decided on a place called Upper Roddlesworth as it was fairly local to us both and day tickets are available at a reduced rate following the last stocking of the water at the end of October.
As I have done some walking in the area I had a rough idea of where it was and after some driving here and there we managed to get down to the water.
My idea was to fish a floating line with a sink leader of 5ft with a 5ft tippet.
Fly was a green and black tadpole.
I struggled a bit with the casting but did manage enough decent casts for me not to get too downhearted although I kept dragging the bottom and lost two flies on snags .Anyway to cut a long story short Tony had this lovely rainbow of around 3-3 1/2lb.

Well done Tony. My turn to catch next

Great to see you've got on here at last Tony.

And I see you've got a new name.

I've put my request in for a few home tied shrimps but I think the river might be out of sorts for this weekend. Theres always Curleys or Twin lakes or even Pendle?

Looking forward to getting my first fish on the fly soon

Hi Phil,

Nice to see you caught!

Hadn't thought of suggesting Upper Roddleston to you, on the other thread.

It's a funny place, and due to the number of walkers, guess it's like being in a gold fish bowl when your out in a boat!

I walked around the 3 reservoirs in the summer with my wife and daughter, but when trying to find it, we initially ended up in the hills - miles above the lakes, and only found it by parking in Abbey Village, and walking in along the first reservoir, only to then discover - it's quite a long walk around all 3 lakes.

From what I remember, finding the access road and getting to the parking area would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Anyway, nice to see you caught!

Yes we had problems finding it and ended up walking about half a mile from Roddlesworth info centre .
I can't see us fishing it again for a good while but if we do I'll be getting a good OS map to find that parking spot right next to the lake.
Good to know theres a few locals on here anyway

Cheers Phil

If we don't get much more rain the rivers will have run off and fined down nicely for weekend the cloud cover as made it a little warmer and the fish should be hungry

I received your shrimp request and will be busy tying some pink ones up for you, that little run on the river may produce a fish or two .

Hope to get a few hours at the weekend , as always I will try my best

Yes it was a nice fish but apart from one more follow that came up short that was about it and it wasn't because of the lack of effort

It was busy and I know what you mean with the Goldfish bowl

We struggled to find it but at least we got out for a few hours and the good lady loved the fish

Hi Phil & Tony,

Sounds like you parked where we originally stopped and tried to walk from, but I gave up and tried a different way to the lakes!

If you try to find it next time, I think the access to the track is going to be off Roddlesworth Lane, which is off the main road on the right after you have left Abbey Village, http://www.multimap.com/maps/?hloc=G...f%20Lancashire

I remember trying to work out the access route to the boats, when I was considering fishing there.

Beautiful scenery around the fishery!

Friday 25th April

Fished on a day ticket from 12 - 4. Nice conditions... 14 degrees, light winds, cloud cover. Not much moving on top,but the fish were there, just a foot or so down. Managed 7 fished, taking home a brace of nice blues - 3lb and 2.5 lb. Both fought like blues usually do
I don't know how I managed it though...twiddling a team of D.B's a foot below the surface on a slow inter...in the fish zone. "Goldhead Damsel" was the way forward according to a cock-sure member. Mind you, this is the club that drift nicely with the wind...and fish out of the back of the boat, casting into the wind, cleverly 'covering' fish they have just drifted over ....must try it sometime...with a goldhead damsel.
