Default Best place for a beginner

Hi,

I've promised to take a visiting colleague fishing in a couple of weekends time, so just looking for recommendations within about an hour of Reading. I don't think he's cast a fly rod previously, so want somewhere fairly easy.

Had thought go to Avington, but would rather go somewhere that also does C&R as he won't be able to take his catch with him.

Any recommendations would be great.

J

Frensham is a very pretty C & R venue.
Hazel Copse is easy-peasy but not exactly picturesque.

Thanks Steve, hadn't thought of frensham, was thinking Avington or Dever might be good, but unfortunately no C & R. That may not be essential though. J

You could try Barnes Lakes near Witney. Very nice fishery withe a C&R ticket.

Cheers, not really a fan of Haywards Farm.

Even thought of taking them up to that salmon place in rutland - but that place doesn't seem to have got a great reputation on here.

Hi Johnyboy

Farmoor 1 is about an hours drive from you.

Keep one fish then c/r.

And its very well stocked.

Downside its a concrete bowl but if you are catching who cares.

tight lines

if he is a complete beginner then you will spend time on the casting and fly to use as well as the fishing, would you not want to keep the fish if he caught any? so a day on a lake with c and r seems rather pointless and many expensive, my opinion would be felix farm (not too far) £15 for a complete beginner might take time to catch the 2 allowed, if a brown need put back anyway. i would have the morning practice and fish hoping 1 trout, stop for lunch. then more practice in the afternoon and hope another fish. to me the basic casting and getting your colleagues interest in fly fishing would be the main object and hoping a fish and enjoy the time together. anyway where ever you decide happy fishing.

Not too worried about the money aspect, so long as a good time is had. Keep meaning to go back to Felix, haven't been since the change of ownership.

I like Farmoor, but bit too much concrete on this occasion.

Think I'll just suggest avington or dever. Cheers for all the suggestions though, it's given me some places to try.
