Interesting that, say 30 years ago, when rainbows first became widely stocked on Scottish stillwaters, the successful flies tended to be big flashy lures.

Nowadays, almost all rainbows, especially on waters such as Menteith, are caught on dries.

My own theory is that the "old" rainbows were sexually mature fish of both sexes and that they had an element of aggression that made them "attack" flashy lures.

Today most stocked fish are triploids or chemically neutered females and maybe lack that aggressive trait, thus explaining their fail;ure to fall to lures and get caught on imitative flies, especially dries.

Any other theories out there??

Dries are certainly very effective at the Lake but you are massively overstating the case to suggest that almost all rainbows at the Lake are caught on dries - this is simply not the case.

Interesting theory. Personally, I feel that the Lake is subject to so much fishing pressure that an imitative approach will often be more effective than pulling bright lures. If there are new stockies around, then blobs, cats, boobies etc are very effective but once they've seen it all, an imitative approach is the way to go.

this is just not the case. small flies ,yes, but dries i really dont think so. in fact booby and blobs on a di 3 was most effective method on the day.i have been out in boats with top class dry fly specialists and they have caught a few fish .but not been near the top rods.
an interesting theory, but in my experience it does not hold water.
