Default Forumites guide to fishing Farmoor

As this seems to be a popular venue for a number of forum readers I thought I would post what I think are the key methods to catching a few fish here, based on yesterday's experiences.

Yesterday, the conditions could not have been worse (blazing sunshine, flat calm) but we still caught a decent number of fish. I think these methods would cover you for the next few months.

Washing line - when the fish are showing on the top this is the number one method. Either a black or daddy booby on the point, a diawl bach in the middle and a black hopper on the top dropper seemed the best combination. I added a hookless bung at one point to my loop and fished this static, catching one and losing one in the time it took to eat a sausage roll
The benefit of fishing it static like this in the flat calm was that the flies stayed out at maximum range for as long as possible.

Boobies on a Di7 - love them or hate them, when it is blazing sunshine a large proportion of fish go deep. I don't like the "legering" method that seems popular amongst the regulars but casting as far as possible, letting everything settle for a couple of minutes and then giving it a twiddle works very well. PP had a limit doing just this yesterday. Cat, orange or black seem best.

Buzzers - one of the regulars had a limit straightlining buzzers and I had three in an hour at one point fishing them on a bung spaced at 4, 8 and 12 ft. Black size ten with green or yellow wing buds worked for me but I am not sure the colour is vital. I found static with a twitch every now and then worked best when it was flat calm and again prefer the bung as they stay at range for longer.

Lures pulled on a medium sinker - when it got very bright, Starsky had three just casting and pulling on a Di3. I think these were the fish that were on the top earlier and had gone down to 5-6ft.

Overall, I would say it is an excellent venue, well stocked with relatively evenly dispersed fish, which fight extremely hard. Having fished it yesterday in poor conditions I would feel confident of catching a few in any circumstances between now and the end of the year.

Shame it's 80 miles for me

Charlie

80 miles isn't too bad.
I'm off to Rutland tomorrow with 196 each way

Washing line is the method for me. Two tone booby on the point and diawl's on the droppers. Also dries very successful when the fish are right up. Don't really need to fish boobies on Di lines although there are days when you have too. Get ready for those minkie boobies. When they switch onto the fry, normally after the first frost, the minkie booby is the fly to use. I normally use a Di3 line, 15' leader and a single minkie booby on the point. A lot of fish will take it before it is dragged under by the sinking line.

Ahh, Lampeterexile, I note no mention of the number of diawls or the number of droppers....

I used sunburst and white booby to good effect on farmoor on a couple of occasions.

Three always works better than two
