Default Assynt disappointment.

I made a 1000 mile round trip to fish Loch Assynt.
Whilst it has about 23miles of shore I found that only about half a mile of bank was accessible or fishable. I found there were a few safe bays to fish. No longer had I been fishing that a boat came and fished the shoreline with spinning tackle passing me bye by about 10 yards. No attempt was made to avoid the water I was fishing. They had 10 fish in the boat and I blanked that day.
To say the least I was disappointed.

These terrible competition guys with their non-existent boat etiquette getting that far north!

Never fished Assynt, but can recommend the Scourie Lochs - having travelled that far you must have stayed somewhere and the fishing is part of the deal at the Scourie Hotel.

Regards,

Sorry for your pain. Were you fishing for trout? I've fished up there for years and never bothered to fish "the big loch" as there are so many more (in my view nicer) lochs to fish in the area. Next time give the others ago.

I'd echo Kircaig's comments. I've fished Assynt many times, almost exclusively from a boat except perhaps for the odd eveing dabble from the bank at the top end where the Lodden or the Traligill streams enter the loch or the bays around Ardvreck Castle. As Kircaig says, a bit of a walk up the stalkers path behind the Inchnadamph Hotel and you have access some wonderful lochs where your bank fishing will be undisturbed.

The guys in the boat were probably trolling for salmon and many of the favoured 'lies' for the salmon are the 'beaches' between the headlands and the technique is to sweep in close to the shore, then out and back in to the next one. As you've found out, ad hoc bank fishing plays a distant 'second fiddle' to boats on lochs like Assynt.

I really hope you didn't go all that way and just fish Assynt - there are so many other lochs around more suitable for bank fishing. And other lochs nicer for boat fishing too - Ailsh, Awe, Fionn...
