Pray for a relatively breezy, overcast, damp day, and ask the ranger in the lodge for his best advice for the day. Give his advice a damned good go before discarding it !
Due to the configuration of the lake as a continuous dam wall, it is not essential to fish from a boat to catch well. You could reach 28 or 30 feet of depth at the end of a 30 yard cast off the bank.
I have known all the following to catch well at Farmoor - on their day - at this time of year;
Imitative Tactics with floating line
Dry flies - daddy longlegs if the naturals are blowing off the surrounding fields on to the water, or modern patterns like hoppers, shipmans and bits
Buzzers, diawl bachs, crunchers and so on fished washing line style
Superglue buzzers - black and green are 2 reliable colours - fished nice and slow in the top few feet
Deeper nymphing with a heavy point fly like a damsel or big goldhead buzzer
Lure Tactics
A muddler minnow or booby ripped fast through the surface waves off a floating line
Searching the water with an orange or yellow lure off a medium sinking line at various depths for daphnia feeders
The booby fished slow or fast off a fast sinker.
About the only thing you may miss out on is serious fry bashing ,which by popular reputation does not really kick off at Farmoor until the first frosts later in the autumn.
Good luck - Farmoor fish are of superb quality
