Default Carsington Water

Can anyone give me advice on fishing Carsington Water.

My mate, total novice, and me almost total novice are planning on going up in a fortnight or so.

Any advice, tips, drifts, patterns greatly appreciated

Ask the rangers where there are fish, they will always guide you onto fish. This year there are more fish out in the middle of the water than normal and if it's sunny just backdrift a couple of lures (white and sparkler) out of the back of the boat on a Di7 across open water. This will pick up a fish or two for you when it's difficult.
As the sun goes down there will be a hatch of sedges or buzzers. Try drifting in Tower bank or Upperfields Bay. There are usually good ares for evening rises.
Use a floater as there are a lot of fish in the weed beds which are just below the surface. Any deeper and all you will catch is weeds. My favorite flies are wickhams, diawl bach and Montana on the point.
Pray for a cloudy day with a bit of a ripple and keep moving until you find fish.
The fish are surprisingly localised here.
The water is high and the weeds are just starting to come up, fish round the edges of the weeds as there are lots of fish patrolling close in.

Don't be disappointed if you don't catch early on, be patient and you will be rewarded. This place is great, even if you don't catch the scenery is amazing.

No problems

Let me know how you get on.

Drop me a PM a few days before you go and I will try and give you any new info before you go. I try and go 2 or 3 time a month but try to keep up to date.

Default Fishin report - Aug 5th

Number of Returns: 77
Number of fish: 162
Rod Average: 2.1

Best Rainbow: 4lb Best Brown: 3lb 9oz
Caught By: J.S. Carter Caught by: Paul Gaskell
Fly: White Lure Fly: Minky
Area: Unkown Area: Deep Water off Sailing Club Island

REPORT
Well no half measures from the weather! From rain and misery to 30 degrees and not a cloud in the sky in less than a day! At least the summer has arrived at last. The wind has either been from the SW or from the W this week with nothing stronger than about a force 4. The water temperature has started to creep up now and has reached 18 degrees off the end of the jetty. The warmer weather has sparked hatches of flying ants as well as many beetles and even a few daddies and on calm evenings the trout are happily sipping these down from the wind lanes across the reservoir. There have been a lot of fish out across the middle of the reservoir feeding between the surface and about 8 feet down and the wind lanes have been good holding areas.
The best Rainbow this week goes to Mr J.S Carter who landed an excellent 4lb trout whilst fishing from his boat. Mr Cater used a white lure to tempt his top fish.
Paul Gaskell was the captor of the best brown this week. Paul landed a stunning fully finned grown on brown of 3lb 9oz using a minky on a DI3 line. Paul and his boat partner were drifting out past the island and out over the deep water when this cracking fish nailed Paul’s lure and took off for open water. It was some several arm aching minutes later before Paul was able to safely land it. When this fish was spooned it had been eating 1 inch long fry, a couple of beetles and some snails. Paul and his boat partner both took more trout from this drift parallel to the islands drifting away from the Dam Wall.

Top Spots this week have been anywhere across the Middle of the Reservoir Fishtail Creek, The Dam Wall, Sailing club Island and Upperfields Bay in the Boats and Upperfields Bay and Milfileds Point from the Bank.

Top Flies include: Damsel’s, Montana’s, White Lures, Traditional Wets, Diawl Bach’s, Black Frtiz, Shuttlecock buzzers, Beetles and Buzzers

Thumbs down Blank at Carsington

First blank of the season at Carsington yesterday for both of us. Not a single pull.

None of the other boats were catching either.

Water clarity was good, lots of weed, level unsurprisingly high.

Only saw 2 fish rise all day.

No fly life on water, other than one or two mating damsels.

We saw a bank angler catch a small roach - only fish we saw all day

And it was a "Fun Day" which seemed to require lots of young people to rush in and out of the water to the accompaniment of loud music.
Looked like a scene from a modern day purgatory to me.

Nice weather though, and there are far worse places to be...

Get a copy of this months Total Flyfisher, there's a good article by Rob Edmunds and Graham Pearson.

REPORT
Well that is it for another season here at Carsington Water. I hope that all of you who fished with us this year enjoyed your time at Carsington and I hope that you have enjoyed these reports and maybe even found them to be of some use to you as well!.
The weather was kind to us for our final week with light winds from the S/ SW and mild temperatures for the time of year. There was good cloud cover for most of the week and the water temperature has crept down to 14 degrees.
Phil Harding Claims the last best rainbow of the season, a stunning fish that tipped the scales at 5lb 2oz. Phil also had another excellent rainbow weighing 4lb 3oz in his bag. Both of these superb trout fell to an orange booby fished on an Intermediate line whilst drifting out across the middle of the main basin.
The final best brown goes to Tony Curtis who landed a cracking grown brown of 3lb 7oz. Tony’s trout fell to a fry lure fished on a medium sink line whilst drifting near to buoy 5 across the mouth of Fishtail Creek.
As I have already said that is it for another season, but keep you eyes on our web site: www.stwater.co.uk/carsingtonfishery for updates and news for the new season in 2008. Already we have plans to open up Millfileds Bay to the boats; we are also planning to expand the fleet of boats and will continue to improve the stocking policy for next year. Our opening day next year will be Saturday 22nd March, so remember to book early to avoid disappointment. The booking’s number is 01629 540 478 and the fishery office is 01629 540 769.
All that remains for me to say is, once again, thanks again to everyone who came to Carsington Water this season and we look forward to welcoming you back in 2008. I would also like to say a huge thanks very much to all the team who work so hard to make this fishery what it is.
Tight lines to all of you and a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Top Spots this week have been anywhere across the Middle of the Reservoir Fishtail Creek, The Dam Wall and Stones Island in the Boats and Millfileds Point from the Bank.

Top Flies include: Orange Boobies, Fry Patterns, Diawl Bach, Bibio, Cats Whisker, Viva, Traditional Wets and Montana’s

Thanks for your updates, this has been my first year on Carrsington and all 6 trips have first class, the staff are great, amongst the very best and the water is beautiful to the eye with lots of interesting features.

Next years developments sound good, when will you be open to take bookings for the first week, rgds Paul
