I fished Rutland on Saturday from a boat. After discussion with my boat partner we decided to stick it out down the South Arm in the hope of a few better fish rather than fishing for the stockies in the basin.
We were the ONLY boat in the whole of the South Arm for large portions of the day (should have told us something

). The water quality looked to be very good and conditions were not bad with several sustained overcast spells.
We drifted for most of the day between Hideaway and Green Bank, and Lax Hill to Old Hall. I reckon we probably only saw 4 fish move all day! We fished from about 11a.m. to 7.30p.m. and finished the day with 2 pulls for one fish between the two of us, although the fish we caught was a fin-perfect over-wintered rainbow of 3lb taken on Bibio Hopper, right out in the open water.
We both remarked that there seemed to be something not right about the day. We are both season ticket holders and have fished the water regularly over the years; I can't remember the last time I've seen it as dead as this. I can only suggest that the recent heavy rain has introduced a lot of additional water, both pumped in and from the streams/run-off, and this may have affected the fish. Let's hope that this isn't the pre-cursor to the South Arm going the same way as the North Arm has in the last 10 years.
Graham.
