Default Loch Venachar

Me and my Friend Tom fished Loch Venachar today and it was pretty hard going. It was flat calm all morning with the odd dimple of a rise to be seen, then a cool easterly breeze in the afternoon seemed to put everything down.

We had some sport though, all on the dry fly and all in the first half of our day up to about 2.00pm. Tom rose 4 connected with 2 and landed one of about 3/4Lb. I rose 5 connected with 2 and landed one just over 1Lb.

I was fishing a claret hopper and a hares ear hopper when it was flat calm and Tom was fishing various CDC's. We did try a few other patterns and methods throughout the day, with no success.

It's a fabulous set up at Loch Venachar, although it's a bit pricey for a mid-week boat at £41.00 for 2 anglers; £25.00 for the boat and £8 each for a 5-fish limit fishing permit. Including Tom and I there was a total of two boats out.

I wouldnt say £41 for two people fishing from a boat on a five fish limit each is expensive.
I would say, dont move to the south of England if you want cheap fishing.

Yea - I think it's OK VFM wise (or I wouldn't go!) but a number of others are iffy - see previous thread for details:

Loch Venachar

the loch is a changing, mainly due to the stocking policy there, throwing in non native (in the strain sense, not the species) browns. Now you'll end up stockie bashing there, ok browns but still stockies.OK if thats what u want and there ain't a problem with that. But look at the 2 photos, very different fish. The 1st one looks "real" colours and spots.Quite probably a native trout, or at least has some native genes....The 2nd one is pallid in comparison, very few spots and is clearly a stockie...(not a dig at flyonly here). They want to make venachar the "No 1 brown water " but I can't see how this will work. They are charging much more than previously, for stocked trout, might as well be rainbows really, like mentieth.

Your information doesn't stack up with some of the major fisheries "down south". Here is the 2007 price liost from Anglian Water (Rutland et al)
Trout Fishing Prices 2007

Day permit £18 (8 fish limit) reduced to £17 from 1 October
Catch and release permit £17 (1 fish limit) not available at Rutland July to 22 August
Half day £13 (4 fish limit) valid all day from 1 November to 31 December
Motor boat hire £25 full day, Rutland & Grafham, £21 at Pitsford, reduced by £2 from 1 October (boats finish end of November)
Season permits from £189 (Starters only) see our Hooked magazine for all the options available
Three day boat fishing holiday £149 for two anglers, special rates for groups of 8 or more including accommodation on request (finish end of November)
Kids go free! Juniors with an adult permit holder can fish free sharing bag limit.
Where to buy your permit available from fishing lodges and vendor huts if the shop is not open

Default Venachar

FlyOnly, not sure what point you are making with the AW prices, but thanks for the help on flies in your first post!

Kreid, I'm not getting into the browns/rainbow issue, or the wild/stock issue here, fascinating as they are.

I'm simply fishing fishing Venachar on Wednesday and looking for some up to date info!

Regards,

Dave,

I thought the reply I made to geordiedownsouth on pricing was clear, where comparing Rutland et al with prices in Scotland, shows that the prices "down south" are not that expensive on a relative basis.

With Venachar, it's the add-on requirement for the individual fishing permit that makes it a relatively expensive day out, when compared to other Scottish waters.

Well, here it is! We had a very pleasant, if piscatorially challenging day! A few fish showing around Submarine bay in the morning - managed to get 2 (one small one returned) one on a black and green booby - honest, it was only there to keep my Clan Chief and Kate a bit higher up in the water - and then nothing. Tried otter island, boathouse, grass bank and the road shore for only one pull during the afternoon. A bit dour! The wind was chopping and changing around all day - NE in the morning, SW later in the PM and everything in between. 3 seasons in one day, really, with only winter missing, thankfully! Still, good company and lovely scenery.
