Talking Marton Heath, Cheshire

Not sure if there are any Cheshire fly fishers out there, but I just packed in a quick 5 hours fishing at Marton Heath, a very nice fishery (3 lakes) which is just off the A34, between Alderly Edge and Congleton.

It was blowing a bit and the weather alternated between pouring with rain and sunshine. On the top lake, there was a mild mayfly hatch, which the fish were dutifully ignoring. I wasted a bit of time casting out my best mayfly flies, but given that the fish were ignoring the real thing, not much chance they were going to take any notice of my flies.

When I went to the bottom lake, I eventually found a good pod of fish and caught 20 (including a 4lb carp) on a hopper and buzzer combo. The naturals were a lot smaller than the hopper, but I didn't have any smaller flies and the ripple on the surface must have stopped the fish being too fussy.

Great fun!

Ahh Marton, i learnt to fish their on a course two years ago this August!

It's a very good and friendly water with lots of buzzer hatches and in the summer the fruit farm there is great for some rasberries for lunch!

Diawl Bach's very good in a buzzer hatch there.(Well thats what i catch on on my pathetic attempts at buzzer fishing!)

Oh, just remembered, ive had good success in a mayfly hatch with a woven marabou 'waggle' mayfly nymph. Can't find a picture though of the fly!!

By"waqggle" do you mean the hook used is a "living nymph" shape, or is it two hooks jointed?

I'm back there this weekend, I hope the weather is kinder....

Hard to describe... I suppose it probably is a "Living Nymph", it has weighted eyes at the front and a pheasant tail thorax cover and legs/thingys... and a woven white and brown marabou tail..

Hope you can get some sense from that!
