Default Talybont Reservoir, South Wales

Hi guys,

I'm going to be fishing Talybont reservoir in the Brecon Beacons for the first time this evening and wondered if anyone has any info on it.

Am I right in thinking that the reservoir holds primarily wild browns? I've heard the fishing there is hard and that traditional patterns work best, although if anyone who has fished it lately has any info on best areas, patterns, etc, it will be much appreciated!

Cheers

Gareth

Yeh, some nice browns in there.

Try and fish the end where the wind is blowing into, have the wind coming from left to right.

The fish tend to move to where the wind is blowing, following the food. No point standing there with the wind behind you, might be more comfortable but will be harder to catch.

Floating line with Bumbles, Bibio, Kates, Diawl Bachs, Crunchers, Dabblers, Invicta, Snatchers, those kind of flies.

Tightlines!

The Pirate.

I've always found the top end where the stream enters to be the most productive but given the weather it could well be pretty dirty water there now. The wading there is very dodgy when the water's not clear, there are some old workings with sudden steep drops.
Traditional wets in small sizes do well for me there, size 14 and 16's but one of the best trout to come from there - a 5lb er - was taken on buzzers.
A large black bead head tadpole lure fished very close to the bottom works well if the fish are down and sulky - as they often are.
When the fish are chasing a hatch the fishing is fantastic and dry olive patterns size 14 do really well but Talybont can be a bit of a so and so unless you catch it at the beginning of a hatch. My favourite approach is a long walk round to the wooded side at the top end, wade carefully and flick out some flies every few steps. The trees are a complete menace as they come right to the waters edge and the drop off in the lake is quite steep that side but the fish are usually close in and undisturbed due to the difficulties in fishing for them.
It's a good spot and given the state of the Taff and the likelyhood of arctic conditions at Upper Neuadd I can see exactly why you're going there!

Thanks for the info guys; really looking forward to it!

Diawl Bach - The state on the Taff this morning as I crossed it driving to work resembled a river from a white water rafting film! Haven't seen it that high for a good while. And the last time I was at the Upper Neuadd it hailed for a good 30 minutes!

So, I'm hoping for a spot of 'normal' fishing this evening!

Thanks again.

Hi guys,

Cheers for the advice, had a good few hours on friday evening, although, it was quite hard.

I did have one fish on...only for it to jump the hook after 30 seconds or so, my fault there!

Was very impressed though, so I plan to visit it a lot more often.

Top marks to the reservoir!

After Gareth's enquiries about Talybont it was on my mind so I decided to give it a go yesterday in some pretty envigorating weather. A force 4 - 6 wind was blowing straight along the lake with rain bucketing down periodically, I only stayed a couple of hours, it was too cold.

Casting was challenging but the trout were quite close in to the flooded margins and for once they were switched on.I was snapped by a Very Large Fish on my second cast - a bad knot on my stepped leader cost me the best brown trout I've hooked. Landed one and then lost one by playing it too hard, a pretty incompetent session really! Rose at least a dozen more using a couple of size 8 wets, mallard and claret and a black gold and orange job.

There was a really good wave on the water.......

and it was good to see the feeder streams full in the middle of sumer for the first time in several years. Back up when the weather calms a little, the rivers will be out for days.

Bloody hell! There's a bit of a chop on in those pictures DB! Nice pics though.

May be popping up for another evening session tonight, I'll see how the weather turns out...definately hooked on that place (excuse the pun!)!
