Thumbs up Loch Venachar

Fished Venachar over the last couple of days. The fishing was as hard as nails because the fish were preoccupied with these

both as nymphs and hatching - there were big mayfly shucks all over the water. There is obviously a huge head of fish in the water if you are good enough to get them out!

However, the organisation of the place is great - Mark and his team are as helpful as could be and you get the impression that they really want you to catch fish, and (obviously) return another day. The lodge is excellent, too, and Mrs Diogg rates the scones to be the best she has tasted apart from her own home bakes - no modesty here!

I look forward to returning with my club next Saturday.

While i agree that the place is looking good i do feel that they will have to review thier prices , they charge £50 for a weekend boat , also £39 for a single angler boat . And you also dont get much change from a tenner for your fishermans breakfast , now i know i,m a fifer but that is a rip off is it not , your right about the fishing dave was out on friday in national semi and they were tough managed two and dropped two all on mayfly patterns . It is one off the most stunnig places to wet a line the setting is wonderful

Good point main but not only reason I will not be back. I fished this loch many years ago for free early on in my youth from the bank & for a few pounds for a boat in later years. Changed days now.
Similar thing but not just with Carron for me anyway. A days fishing permit from Central Region for £10 including boat & I could raise Browns on my Clyde Style flies across the whole water. Private hands & now see the difference. £25 to fish from the bank, 3 fish limit & still limited access at that, no thank you very much. Whilst I see why these charges arise from I sometime think that I am just filling someone else coffers at my expense, maybe I am a cheapskate I do not know. Andrew Moray says I am.

Tight lines

Hi, Highlander. In many ways I'm with you in spirit, but modern practicalities get in the way. I paid £41 for 2 people to fish Loch Venachar on Thursday - £25 for the boat, powerful engine and petrol, and £8 for each ticket. I think that is good value, all things considered, for a full day on the water. Not sure where the £25 comes in, but I agree that I would not pay that for a 3 fish ticket anywhere - at least I don't think I would! I am pretty catholic in my fishing tastes, enjoying wild trouting up in Scourie as much as rainbow bashing on LoM or the Midland Reservoirs. In some ways I don't think you can separate the different forms of angling - the guys who fish the put and take fisheries (as I do) allow wild brownie fishing to survive, which I also enjoy.

Colin, agree £39 for a single man boat is pretty steep, but as ever, there is a choice! As noted above, I think £41 is good for a days fishing for 2 - I pay £14 to watch my (1st Div) football team play (what passes for football!) for 90 min - and the ball is only in play for 50 - 60 mins. I suspect the lodge food prices are because it's a 6 month season (at best) and the bacon roll (which was excellent yesterday!) price compares favourably with M&S coffee shop.

Regards,

Paul bank permit is £8 weekday and £10 weekend , Dave my point was that if they want it to work (and by the way i hope it dose) they need clubs to be booking the place out most clubs fish the weekend and £50 notes is to much , we were also told that they were going to fit out the big shed for anglers just try going into the cafe with your wet boot,s and waterproofs on you get some looks let me tell you !! , We had a club outing two weeks ago now the weather was bad granted for 13 rods we had 15 fish for 12lb , and i got three of them now i quiet enjoyed my day but i now for a fact that it will not get voted for next season and i fear that will be the situation for a lot of clubs visiting the place . hopfuly i am wrong

Fair enough, Colin. I think we are agreed on most of it! The club I fish with tends to level out the cost of each competition to £22 or £23, so I don't notice the difference too much. I just hope it's a success, too.

Regards,
