Also has anybody used the holiday cottages?

Many thanks in advance,

Hi Jonathan,
I haven't been to Tavistock (yet!) but I have got their brochure and the place looks great. Send off for it and it give you pics and details about the cottages.

Jon,

I've been there a few times while on holiday in Devon. It's a good fishery and well worth a visit. There are around five small lakes, two being set aside for specimens. My advice would be to try the first lake you pass when entering and look for fish on top on the far bank; a CDC shuttlecock does the damage. If no fish rising try a gold head damsel on a 15 leader. The roun lake at the back always seems to have rising fish, again being able to get the distance from, dare I say it, the holiday crowd, gives you an advantage. Final tip, the smallest lake is often overlooked, but use polaroids to spot some good fish and stalking tactics with a weigted nymph is the job.

All best, Phil

I used to go here every year on holiday - even though the majority of my fishing is on reservoir or float tube......it was a nice change - a very well run smallwater. We always used to book the "old stables" and stopped there since it's first development - it was very nice and comfortable.
Only that I now have a growing family - I'm sure I still would be going. The fact I went here 10 days after my first born 2.5 years ago knackered it up with my misses

Abigail the owner was great and the welcome and relaxing environment from her and the staff was a real attraction.

Myself and my fishing mate both had fish of around 20lb on our first trip - but on subsequent years we never had many doubles as they seemed to move away from massive stocking - but it's not all about big fish.....

When I used to go - they had two tickets - specimen and normal, this has now changed I believe and all pools are stocked the same - with a good head of fish in and the "odd bigun" in each pool - but just one ticket type now.

The reason we first started going here (as it's a fair drive from Wales) is that the fishery complex on paper had everything - at the bottom of the drive there is a pub that opens dinner time and evening with good food and ale - coupled with a cracking fishery - you could park the car up the beginning of the week once you have got a few essentials in the fridge (beer and milk) and not have to worry about driving again if you didn't want to.

I haven't been for 2.5 years, but I'd certainly stick my neck out and say give it a go as we loved it. PM me if you want anymore info and I'll give you my direct email address.

Jonathan,

I agree with everything previously said. It is pretty much the nearest fishery to me, and have fished it many times in the last year.

bassarisk is correct in that all lakes now have large stocked fish. Saying that, I personally think you still have the best chance of catching a large fish (if that is what you are after) at the far end of the Kingfisher lake (old specimen lake) under the trees.

The facilites are great: stocked tackle shop, rest area, tea / coffee making facilites, toilets etc... The cottages from what I have heard are great (having never stayed there). The 'Trout and Tipple' pub across the road does good beer and food so what more could you want.

I don't go up there as often as I used to now that the river / reservoir season has started, but its always a good choice if they are too windy or I just fancy a few hours out of the office
