Default Farmoor 29.5.07

Not being able to stay on for the evening, I fancied that Farmoor might fish better through the day than Pitsford, so that is where I ended up. Very glad I did too. With the wind between west and north I opted for the south west 'corner'.

Nothing was showing on top so I started off with an indicator rig. I took one fish on the top dropper set at 3ft but that was it. Accordingly, I set up with a more conventional nymph rig which worked much better. By tea time I had caught eight fish between 2lbs and just over 3lbs. Most were hooked close in and fairly well down on a variety of nymphs - buzzers, DB, GRHE etc. The condition of most of the fish was exceptional. Can't speak too highly of them. A couple had suffered cormorant damage but were well on the mend. They all fought as hard as any trout I have ever caught. Later, autopsies revealed they had been feeding on a mixture of green daphnia together with midge pupae and larvae of various sizes and colours.

Also succeeded in hooking a line. On one end was a David Norwich 9'6'' #6/7Ev2 rod, on the other a splendid 4lb rainbow. Landed both. Was able to reunite the outfit with its owner who had lost it earlier in the day. Having cast out, this gentleman had put the rod down for a moment, only for it to shoot off the dam wall and into the water before he could do anything about it. Very generously, and quite unnecessarily, he rewarded me with a complimentary day ticket.

Not a bad day on the whole!

Default Farmoor

Hi mugsy

I fished Farmoor on Sunday in the pouring rain Everybody fishing static booby's, I tried to fish nymphs/buzzers but they were moving far too fast so opted for sinker/lure option took 4 fish on white fritz. One fish was 3.5lbs one of 3lbs and two a little over 2lbs.

I can only agree with what you said regarding quality of fish, condition/fighting there weight!

Glad you had your limit i have only done this once at Farmoor and i think it is a very good achievement well done!!

Tim

Haha, what a result! I can just imagine the "What the f***?" reaction to seeing the rod appear out of the depths.

Sounds like you had a day to remember for all the right reasons. Good work.

Default Farmoor

Thanks for the report, Mugsy, the story of the 'caught' rod, line and rainbow made me laugh out loud - I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often at Farmoor, having seen a number of rods balanced on the walls there!

Hi Diogg,

Some of the anglers to whom you refer have their rods placed in special clamps. What's the difference between that and a carp-style rod pod, bite indicator and baitrunner reel set-up? In effect that's what they are already doing. Is it fly fishing I ask myself? Mind you, I have to admit to experimenting with the 'bung', so who am I to talk?

Default Rods, Dam walls, etc

Hi, Mugsy - each to their own as far as I am concerned regarding styles of fishing - I much prefer boat to bank, but have done both at Farmoor with a degree of success (when I lived near Glos). The rod resting on the Dam wall scenario does not appeal, but I have to admit that the 'static nymph' technique of flies out the back of the boat while having lunch has come up trumps on a couple of occasions!! I have tried the bung a couple of times, but without success - however, it is on my list for further experiment this year, if I can get out sometime without a gale force wind!

Some Farmoor anglers take it even further by fishing a team of white boobies and feeding handfuls of mashed up bread. One bloke I confronted said he was only throwing his sandwiches in! I have seen this twice and as I rarely fish it assume it happens quite often.

And so the fragile line between bait and fly fishing is brocken!
