Default Elan Valley and Llyn Bugeilyn: Advice please

Hi there,

With a few friends, I am spending a long weeked (8th June onwards) trout fishing on the upper Wye Valley. Spending most of our time on the rivers, but want at least one day on a stillwater. Thinking of either Elan Valley or Llyn Bugeilyn, which are both available as part of the Wye and Usk Foundation pasport scheme.

I have never fished any of them before but recall from several years ago that some of the Elan valley reservoirs were stocked and some wild.

Any useful info/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

WJD

wjd.

Go and fish Claerwen Reservoir at the top end of the Elan Valley, truly wild brown trout in wild surroundings, drive up alongside the res to the top end, it should be Coch y Bonddu time, with free rising trout everywhere, don't forget your camera, let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the advice Spy1. I had heard that there was a problem with acidity in the feeder streams and that the Elan Valley Reservoirs have trouble maintaining a wild head of trout such that they needed to be stocked.

Is this a thing of the past, or is Claerwen less acidic than the other reservoirs. How does the fishing on Claerwen compare to the other Reserviors that are stocked ?.

Cheers,

wjd

Fished Claerwen on the Friday evening (8th) for a few hours, on the South side for about a half a mile or so above the dam wall. Caught a good number of brown trout to 10", mostly on a wet Coch y Bonddu.

On Saturday, started off on Craig Goch in hot temperatures, blue skies and almost flat calm. Lots of Coch y Bonddu in the water and several fish rising quite far out. Did not rise a fish, so in the afternoon moved up to Claerwen. Drove up the road this time and fished the North bank for 3 hours, again without a rise. There was a good ripple by this stage, and only a few Coch. The road is pretty rough and I was rewarded by a puncture. Went home disappointed, but will be back to try again.

Would be interested in hearing how anyone else got on this weekend.

Cheers,

wjd
