Question Hanningfield - Wierd Algae / Weed

I fished Hanningfield yesterday with a Mate from a boat, the fishing was really hard, albeit, not because of the terrential rain and wind.

There were signs of algae in the water, and no matter what, every time I cast my flies out they came back with green algae on them, whether using a team of buzzers / wets or Boobies on a Di7.

We managed a fish apiece and fished hard all day long and was the last boat too leave.

The algae was not like what I have seen before, it seemed to stick to your line and then clump up like a sponge and was quite hard to remove, see pic below.

I'm sure the slightest wiff of this stuff put the fish off!

Vinnie, I had heard there was algae in it again. Supposedly it has come in with water pumped in recently

Is it everywhere, or are there any areas you can go to get away from it ?

Charlie,

It was everywhere we tried; over by the tower opposite the lodge, inlet, middlemead, you can see it where the boats are moored up.

The wind started blowing from the inlet direction, and then mid afternoon it swung round and was blowing from the direction of the lodge - along Middlemead.

Trout we caught were full of green buzzers (around 14 - 16 hook size), and one had loads of large snails in it. The trout were definately feeding, just I feel they didin't want to try anything tainted with algae.

I hope it sorts itself out for you, maybe it will sink down to the bottom.

Good luck in the Competition!!

Interestingly, I phoned the lodge today and they denied there was any significant amount of weed or algae. Has a week of rain cleared it up or are they spoofing - hard not to notice it though, if it is still there

Hanningfield fished its nuts off today. 20 anglers in the match caught 158 fish, Lloyd Pallet bagging up in an hour and several by midday. I got to teh right side of the reservoir too late and then caught four fish in four casts to finish but it was 3pm by then.

The whole Inlet, Peninsula and Atlantis area was alive with fish and buzzers. All mine came to green or black buzzers under the bung.

I fished Hanningfield last Friday (31st May) and thankfully there was no sign of the slime or any of the floating algae that sometimes makes fishing awkward. The clarity was fantastic, about 10 feet + the fishing was fantastic. Bank and boats all doing well with rods bending everywhere along the natural bank, Hall Point, inlet dam and Atlantis. I didn't venture much further so not sure about other areas. Floating line and 3 buzzers fished very slowly or just drifting on the wind worked for us and it seemed others were doing similar. Had some cracking hard fighting fish to 4lb 3oz. Well worth a visit at the moment but the hot weather looks like it's on the way for the weekend. Also, they have finally got some new engines on the boats - not before time. Thanks for the updates and tips which came in very useful for us last week.
