Think we've been here before ........

Springwater Fly Fishery Macmillan Competition

Did you manage to get to the point (GAC) and have a chat with Davie McPhail - possibly get some flies off him ?

Like I said I've never fished the place before - but typical starting flies for any new smallwater have got to be cats whisker, damsel nymph or olive fritz, orange fritz, some sort of black lure (Jim has supplied tying for one of those) - then a few natural nymphs like a hares ear, pheasant tail, diawl bach and buzzers and a few dries - perhaps a few boobies (if allowed). Thing is not to overload yourself with loads of patterns as you are just swapping all day and not fishing - the cat for example takes a big percent of stockies in this country, just stick with flies you have confidence in. Also eyeball what your competitors are doing - lines, size of flies etc....on a stillwater you can usually see the flies clearly when you are all packed in close together - especially if they are great big "pulling flies". If you see a bung thrown out - 90% of the time they will be hanging nymphs or buzzers under the surface - so gives a clue straight away (although you can hang lures under them).

Chill out on the comp day too....I started boat comp fishing two seasons ago and I get really nervous sometimes cause its so much different to bank fishing and the casting goes out of the window and I spend more time tying up leaders than I do fishing - easier said than done I know

Lochmor,

I had a good day at Springwater on Wednesday. Got a 4 hour ticket and for the first half wandered about fishing either a team of 3 buzzers or various nymphs (Pheasant tails, GRHE, etc). However, I only managed a single fish on a red buzzer although I did get a few touches on a goldhead GRHE. Moved to the deeper water (clearly marked) for the remaining time and switched to intermediate and a sunburst orange nomad. I picked up 4 on that fly and a further 2 on a flo. yellow nomad. Would probably have caught more if my time hadn't run out. There were fish moving occasionally but they seemed to be holed up in the deeper water (it was very bright and warm) and didn't seemed particularly interested in imitative patterns (could be down to my poor tying skill though). Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Hi all i know you must be eager to know how i got on (sitting on the edge of you're seats) lmao

so here is how the day went ....

10 mins into the comp i landed the first fish of the comp (chuffed to bits man)

1 hour later dropped one

Kept getting follows but they just would not hit the damn fly man

Half an hour later i stalked a nice rainbow for about 1.5 hours but that just did not want any of the 20 odd flies i put on its nose so off i went and moved spots

Half an hour before the comp finished i switched to a green/black booby on a di5 and lost about 3 or 4

5 mins before the end i had a knot in my fly line so i put my rod down and when i was getting the knot untangled i felt a massive pull and i had to hand line the fish to the bank but as i slid the net under it it flipped and went away and i nearly started crying as it was at least 5lb so i went home in a bit of a bad mood

At the end of the comp we got a pic took and prizegiving took place

I had one of the best times of my fishing career so far today it was amazing

all in all we raised 1714 pounds for the AYR cancer research

Thanks...Martin

P.S. sympathy would be much appreciated
