Fished Avon Springs on Saturday, I was surprised to have it to myself on such a lovely day. Maybe the attractions of the garden BBQ and FA cup semi final were too much for the flyfishers of Wilts and Hants ?
Club lake is crystal clear but Island carries a touch of colour. Some alge clumps were rising to the surface and drifting to the south end of Club where the bailiff and 2 helpers were busy removing it using the time honoured long rope.
I struggled to find fish at first, unusually the springs at the top end of Club failed to produce and Island was very quiet. But in the late morning I followed the bailiff's advice to try the deeper water at the house end of Club near where the guys were working. I did so with immediate success - an early fish on a twitched heavy hares ear bug, 2 on a big ugly damsel nymph and the last on a small beadhead cats whisker I tried as a change fly when takes on the damsel dried up. Best was a season's best 7lber, backed up with a near 5, a 4+ and a 3+.
Always pays to fish where the fish are
