Fished Blagdon in a boat yesterday. It was all looking a little dodgy over breakfast at Woodford Lodge as the boats weren't being let out at Chew. However, Blagdon was much calmer, benefiting from the shelter of the Mendips. The lake was very low and the fish well spread out.
Most bank anglers congregated on Green Lawn due to the wind direction, although fair play to those how did give the North Shore a go (albeit a brief one!).
Most the boats made their way up to the top end where the action came thick and fast.
The wind was a little strong for drifting (would have been perfect on a lough in a 19'er), so we anchored up in front of Ash Tree and immediately started hitting fish on nymphs. It was looking like an early limit, so I switched to traditional flies to see how the fish would respond. They continued to take, black pennell scoring, along with dibbled daddies.
Later in the afternoon the weather calmed right down and so did the fishing. The martins that had been covering the lake surface in the morning had disappeared as the hatches slowed up. It wasn't until the end of the day that the flies started appearing again and we managed the odd last fish.
Final tally: 14 to the boat.
