Default Somewhere in Surrey 2007

Cold, windy, rusty. Waders leaked from the first moment I entered the water. New water, totally clueless. No fish.

Loved it!

I guess you were fishing the Wey?

Your day sounds like mine, I had waterlogged banks and a howling gale. River one side, a thin ridge and a bog the otherside.

Some seven foot leaders about to be procured, using 12 feet with a copper head and a 5 feet 9 rod was barking on reflection.

Similarly, somewhere in Surrey which was only 5 mins from home! This was a nice day out - miles of river in the middle of nowhere, nice scenery, no sounds of industry and even a large eagle cirlcing overhead from time to time. I saw a few fish zipping up and down the pools, but the only one I hooked, I landed - a nice brownie of 11 inches taken from a pool below some riffles. It was a nice stretch and ranunculus (no, I can never spell that) in patches where it was shallow enough, and a great portion of the day was spent learning where to enter and exit the river in these areas and then walking through the deep featureless sections to the next likely looking patch. Also found my casting not up to scratch what with the wind giving me billy-o.

I guess the fish won't be as abundant as the whitewater, but I guess I'll have earned them a little more what with the lack of an identifiable 'dead cert corner' to fall back on...

Rather unusual in Surrey. Are you sure? What species?

Probably that rather well known eagle the buzzard. Brian gets a little excitable at times.

eagle / buzzard/ kite - all the same far as I'm concerned!

Eagle isn't a phylogenic distinction as far as I'm aware so I tend to use it for large birds of prey which are larger than hawks but aren't owls or vultures (very common in surrey ;-))

Visited the river again on Easter Monday. Walked the length again and fished a few likely looking spots. Quite an impressive hatch of Grammon. There were some sporadic rises in a riffly run but I failed to tempt any fish. Another blank then but I am really enjoying the whole learning/re-learning process.
