Default Cork Blackwater

The river has been in constant flood since February 11. No fishing has been done at all, so it is very hard to judge whether the spring run is well & truly under way yet.
The last few years have seen a significant increase in the spring run, so hopefully this will continue this year. Certainly there will have been very few spring fish taken, & the welcome new rule of one fish only up to May 12 is a welcome one for conservation-minded anglers.
Anglers can continue to fish catch & release if they do kill a fish.
On March 9, the river is still about 2 feet above good spinning height & 3 feet above fly height. Looking at the weather for the coming week, there seems little prospect that much fishing will be done until mid-March.
Whatever about stocks of spring salmon, at 07.00 this morning when I went to check the gauge height on the river - I saw a flight of five white egrets flying up the river in the early morning light . A beautiful sight!
