just got back from the rhymney and the ebbw, both rivers were higher than I thought, there must have been quite a bit of rain last night, both rivers were very coloured early in the day and only improved slightly during the day, had both rivers to myself though. Didn't even manage to catch a cold though, so first day score...rivers 1 me 0.

It must have been quite a winter as both rivers showed considerable bank erosion and the number of large downed trees was considerable.

The water was still very cold too and not much in the way of ly life about yet, the odd fly with olives predominating. I always expect way too much from the first day of the year. Wait until late april and fishing will be magnificent

There was a sign for a river clean up this Sunday does that mean tomorrow? If so good luck, I'm always amazed at the amount of **** that people chuck in to the rivers.

The Rhym is really low right now around caerphilly. Fish are stacked up in the remaining runs. I foul hooked several fish and decided to quit - there's just nowhere deep for them to go. If it doesn't rain soon, things could get pretty serious.

Also, the rubbish/ littering situation is out of control. What's wrong with people? And why aren't the EA doing anything about this? I counted 6 (SIX!)shopping trolleys, two bikes, a carpet, and several road signs (amongst hundreds of plastic bags, nappys, mcdonalds wrappers, and beer cans) on one 10 Meter stretch of bank. Disgusting. I'm ashamed to say its probably other anglers responsible for much of the food and beverage related rubbish. There's a lot of brown foam in the river as well????

I would be happy to volunteer for a river cleanup anytime. We would need a dump truck though...
