Default salmon angling at carramore, mayo

Two days booked in April on the lake, read an article in trout and salmon recently and it was very informative, wondering if anybody has any additional information on the geography of the lake tackle and tactics to use in mid april, all info appreciated.

Get John Cosgrove or his son to take you out, they know the water like the back of their hands. The usual tactics and locations work for the salmon here although if the wind has been up for a while the water gets dirty due to it being silty and shallow - if this happens then you are better off on the river.
Fish near to rivers mouths, rocky shores and very close in to reed beds if the sun is bright.
Flies to use would be a seals fur body black pennel, R/A green peter, murrough, the usual bumbles and do not forget the bibio. There isn't a 'best' method, vary between a very short line and working the flies on the top to a longer cast and long pulls getting the flies to break through the small (hopefully) waves. Do not forget the intermediate line or slow sinker if conditions dictate but usual loch style tactics work effectively.

Might be there later in the year, would love to go over easter time but 'er indoors has made other plans.

Good luck

Agree with all Geordie's advice. Essential you have a ghillie if you're there only 2 days. Seamus Henry's pub in Bangor Erris ( The West End Bar ) is angling central for the lake and the river. He will set you up with a ghillie and can supply you with all the flies you need. John Cosgrove is great ( hilarious too ) but works for the fisheries in the week. There are other ghillies who will take you out in the week all readily available if you down a few pints in Seamus' establishment. I usually fish a shrimp fly on the point with trout flies on the droppers. Green Peter/ Bibio/ Octopus/ Clan Chief are all good bets. If the wind gets up the lough quickly colours up and becomes unfishable but it's then worth a go on The Owenmore. Alternatively you are only 3/4 hr drive from The Moy which has good fly water on The East Mayo stretch and a decent chance of a springer in April. If you hit the lough right you could have a great couple of days. Whatever you will enjoy the experience. Tight lines.
