Default Owenmore County Mayo - any advice?

Hi there, I've got a mornings fishing booked on the Owenmore on Moday 16th August.

Can anyone recommend tackle / method etc - my intial idea is to take my 7/8 wt 8'6 fly rod as this is fairly versatile and should suit me well on Carramore (see separate post) whcih I am also fishing whislt over there.

Any advice on method also really appreciated.

Paul

Bigger rod again, 9.5 - 10.5 #7, the river can be large in places such as the quarry pool. Also the boat pool at Briske (sp?) benefits from a larger rod as you may have to roll cast. The black bank pool above the bridge at Briske has a series of good naturel pools, as a lot of the pools are man made. I mostly use the orange and gold shrimp if there's a bit of colour or the silver shrimp if the water is low or very clear. Also fish very small down to 16 trebles/doubles, have some fur bodied shrimps to hold the fly up in the water in some of the slower pools. Also be aware of the slower pools if the wind is blowing upstream as a square cast or even upstream cast stripped back will work.

I'd use either 8lb rio co-polymer or stroft up to about 11lb. If you are happy that you will not get wind knots then possibly go lighter with the stroft.

Have a look at the marker at the side of the weir as you enter Banger Erris, if it is around the 2 mark fishing can be quite productive in the Otter Pool, and the Rock Pool.

So no tapered leader, just 11lb stroft connected loop to loop to the braided loop on the end of the fly line?

Paul,

I just use a straight through leader off the spool. Some folk like to fish a dropper but that can be a bit risky if you hook a fish on the dropper and the point fly is looking for every snag or rock to hang on to. It's a personal choice, I will sometimes fish a team just be aware of the potential risks.
