Default Ranunculus

Forgive my ignorance but what is Ranunculus, I googled it and the always factually correct Wikipedia tells me it's the Buttercup family!!.
Now i can't imagine they would be a big problem, are they??

We have quite a lot in places, it appears to have a good year in terms of growth (perhaps not for river); we've thinned it out in places, as it can really clog things up.
