As a Lechlade fan you obviously know of the stretch of the Leach included at that fishery. The Gloucestershire Coln is a very good stream with some day ticket access at Fairford and Bibury. The Evenlode and Windrush are harder to get on but also have some good trout water, particularly in the upper reaches. The Churn is also a nice little stream.

I think you get get a DT for the Windrush at Burford.

David,

Not only can you get a day ticket, but for not much more you can join the club!

Burford Angling Club (secretary: J Swallow. 8 Meadow End, Fulford, Burford, Oxfordshire OX18 4BQ) has the meadow immediately above the bridge as well as other waters in the town. It's a mixed fishery here, and mainly fished by bait anglers, but from the start of the season to June 15 you have the river to yourself (apart from the tourists, dog walkers, swimmers and paddlers - the land owner here is generous with its usage).

Burford has had an Orvis shop for the past few years, so some of the American visitors to the Cotswolds may also be pointed towards the river.

There's a nice mayfly hatch (at least there was when I used to fish it about twenty years ago) and browns are stocked at the start of the season. I've caught grayling here too.

What with sharing the meadow, the best times to fish are weekdays in term time, and before July if you're after the stocked trout. The best trout I saw was about 3lb, caught on a trotted maggot on the first day of the coarse season. It was, however, carefully returned. Members tend to be local, and like to protect their fishing!

For access to other rivers in the area, go along to a meeting of the Cheltenham Fly Dressers Guild http://www.cgfdg.co.uk/ , join and get to know some of the members. There used to be some farmers with their own fishing there. It might take a couple of years for an invitation, but in the meantime you'll learn a lot!

Regards,

Doc
