Default Hebden Bridge - River Calder

Hi there.

When i was a kid growing up in Lancashire, me and my mates used to make sorties over to West Yorkshire in search of the hallowed Brown Trout.

Hebden Bridge was the destination, in paricular a lovely confluence behind the school.

Anyway, that's enough nostalgia. My question is, a little further up the valley is Cragg Vale. A beautiful National Trust area through which the Calder runs. Does anyone know if this is fishable...club owned...private...or alternatively, if there are any other stretches of the Calder which can be fished? This stretch may also be known as Hebden Water...not sure though.

Your help, as always, is greatly received.

Rob

Hi Priest,

Unfortunately there is no fishing available on the national trust land at Hardcastle Craggs. However immedietely below this (Midgehole to Hebden Bridge) the fishing is controlled by the Halifax and Ryburn club. Membership is very reasonable, pm Gina LeFaux for details. Halifax and Ryburn control some large stretches of the Calder between Elland and Hebden Bridge. Great river to fish for wild trout and grayling.

Cheers

Mick Pogson

When I was a youngster me and my mates used to fish this very pool you describe we named it "The Whirlpool".
An excellent spot if a little inaccessible now but still very fishable and holds a very high number of trout some to over 4 lb.
As Mick says there is some excellent fishing on the length of the Calder from Hebden Bridge through to Brighouse.
I am going to rekindle old memories with an early season sorte down there.
