Re the River Ver.
It is difficult to disprove what the guy on the telly says. I would say however, that my Grandfather fished the Ver in the timeless fashion of "tickling for em" and this took place just under the bridge about 400m south of the Chequers Pub. The last resident fish put up a hell of a fight (or so it was said) by Shefford Bridge just a couple of miles along towards St Albans and was caught by two young lads who took it to Warwicks the fishmongers/friers in St Albans and had it for supper about sixteen years ago. It took a bread crust I beleive and weighed approx 3lb.
The Ver used to rise from north of Markyate and was fed by a run off from the downs at Kensworth. It is now just making it's way with the River Red on the southern side of Redbourn. For how long I have not a clue due to abstraction and the like. A couple of years ago a match coarse fisherman friend of mine lay claim to catching some small barbel just north of the old chalkpit/chemical disposal area and I questioned him about trout sightings there and he said that he had observed none. Charles Jardine has also gone on record about the River Ver and other Hertfordshire Chalkstreams and has beleived that there is a nil population of trout. I am not sure, as I am ever the optimist, however I have not sighted or heard of any sightings of trout in the Ver from the Redbourn to St Albans stretch apart from the stocking near the Mill by Redbournbury Fishery about six years ago but I am led to beleive that this stock is now breeding which is good news. I have no idea about other chalk streams in the area that seem to have heavy popularions of chub etc but intend to do some research into the River Beane and will report accordingly. Apart from the River Gade that gets the odd Rainbow escapee cause there is a fishery just north of Hemel Hempstead. It would be nice to think that there are browns in these rivers and we will just have to wait and see and see if they survive!
