Upper Wye (Powys)
The upper Wye, like most other rivers, is showing its bones at the moment.
There are some decent trout around though - anglers fishing a private beat just below Builth had 40 fish in a week recently, best going to two pounds, mostly wild fish.
On the Builth and Groe Park water the best chance of a fish is in the deeper pools which still have some flow to them. I've found the tail of the Church Pool and the head of the Stones Pool to be worth a cast or two, even during the day.
Stockies can be a bit of a nuisance at times, but when you hook a wild fish it all becomes worthwhile.
I've met a few anglers over the last week or so who insisted on wading to fish - don't. With the river this low it isn't necessary to wade to cover feeding fish, and they are easily spooked with the brightness and low water. Tactics which have worked best for me to date were fishing a long light leader and a small dark buzzer fished sub-surface tied on a Tiemco 15 fine wire hook. Cast above your rising fish and allow the current to take your fly down to it. If you covered the fish and it didn't take, move on to another.
A small weighted shrimp tied on the same hook is worth a try in the deeper pools.
With no rain forcast in the immediate future it will be worth scaling down fly size again. As usual on most freestone rivers at this time of year, early morning and late evening will give the best chances of a decent fish.
