Default River Windrush - Burford

Hi everyone

I managed to fish the windrush yesterday, there's some lovely water near the car park with some fast water although not a very long beat. The day was really wonderful and at around 11:30am a fly hatch of dark olives started but fishes were not moving at all. Only at around 1pm a couple of trouts started rising on shallow water and I managed to hook a couple of fishes upstream nymphing which I lost almost immediately. My mate manged 1 decent size trout on nymph and lost a grayling but most of the deep pools seemed empty or with fish stuck on the bottom. We also went to the stretch north of the bridge after the town, there are 2 carriers but the river there is very coarsy, very slow water and despite lots of insect activity with some big brown flies (I could not identify ..?) no fish were rising or moving. I saw some fishes moving on the bottom but none of them was willing to take my nymphs despite trying any sort of pattern and technique. This was coloured by a very inquisitive old woman (guess the land owner?) coming towards us asking 10 times whether we were member of the local angling club and what sort of fishes we were after ...
John at the local Orvis shop was really kind with suggestions and advise, he warned us conditions are not yet ideal for fish rising but I would have bet in a day like this at least nymphing would have given some more results ..

Anyone fished this river in the past and can maybe PM me for advise ? it's in a resonably distance from London and the day tickets are not an extorsions like other Chalk-streams but it looks quite difficult from my first impression.

Default Windrush - Burford

Hi there everyone.
Im new to fly fishing and live in burford so naturally i tried the Windrush with the day ticket from Orvis. Scenery is stunning and even though i was throwing a line into murky water for hours without anything at all...it was a very enjoyable experience.
But would love some advice on flies to use in these conditions and also when this river gets better for fly fishing.
Im not bothered too much about this because i know people do catch fish here so i see it as a challenge but some advice would be much appreciated.
Cheers, Mike

The needlework shop use to sell day tickets as did the Highway Man B&B.
The Orvis shop is probably the safest bet now.

Long time since I bought one, from memory it was a few quid about 10 years ago. Can't see it being over a tenner these days as a season ticket is under £30.
