Default River Cherwell, Oxford

I havebeen living on this river for about 6 months now and walk along it quite regularly but have never fished it. I live in Bletchingdon and sections of the river here look very "trouty" to my untrained eye with nice glides over gravel beds etc...

I just wondered if anyone fished this for trout or grayling and if so which stretches and are there daytickets or free stretches?

Many thanks
Dan

I've never heard o any trout on the Cherwell, though that's not to say that there aren't any in the upper stretches towards Banbury but I think it's unlikely. I fly fish the river occasionally for pike. Kidlington Angling Association controls lots of the waters near you, a quick visit to Predator Angling in Kidlington should give you an idea of what's available season ticket wise. I don't think that there are any free or day ticket stretches. Also I don't know if any of the clubs that control the river have a policy on fishing during the trout season (I.E. closed coarse season).
there are however quite a few other good river fishing possibilities available not too far away.
PM me for details.

Cheers

Andy

Never caught trout on the Cherwell. I head that one of the JK Tackle staff caught a trout on the Ray but that was a few years ago. Thats the best place to ask, they also do most of the permits for the area. I only fish it for chub on the ODAA permit.
hope this helps
Ian

Cheers for the replies, Andy you have a message!!

p.s. Do the chub like to take a fly by any chance? Would love to start catching a few more coarse fish on the fly.

Dan,
Try a big sedge in the margins during the summer evenings. They can't resist...

The Cherwell isn't a fly river on the whole, try the Windrush around Witney it's on the newlands ac ticket .

Yep, had a few pike on the fly on the Cherwell on the Kidlington Angling stretch. You need to search the bank quite a bit but they are there.

Cheers
