Default Easter trip to Wales

Howdy.

I am taking the better half for a nice trip to Wales for Easter and was after some fishing advice. Quid pro quo for me going fishing is that I have to stump up for an expensive hotel and spa treatments! Geez!

We are staying here:

Fishing Hotels, Fly Fishing Wales, Country House Hotel, Lake and River Fishing, Mid Wales, Fishing hotels | The Lake Country House & Spa Lake Country House Hotel

It apparently has 7 miles of fishing on the Irfon. Is the fishing here any good? Would I be better off on the Usk or Wye and if so which beats?

Thanks in advance for any pointers

Steve

oh you are going to have a ball!!!! as long as it doesn't pee down!! i will pm you with a couple of my absolute favourite finds but in general you should give the irfon a go probably the cammarch hotel beat. i tend to fish a couple of the tributaries of the wye nice and intimate and holding large numbers of fish. drop down to the upper usk at sennybridge, penpont area. i am over on the 6th,7th and 8th so leave some for me jon.

The Irfon is a great river to fish. Expensive way to fish with that package but at least you wont be far away from all the pampering!! My favorite river is the Usk and I love the Gliffaes Hotel stretch for beauty and fly life and you can book day tickets if not filled with guests . Usk town has good day fishing too from Sweets Tackle. I notice Kim Tribes name on the web site I believe he appears on here from time to time.Perhaps drop him a line? Have a great time and fingers crossed as to the weather. You can have all the seasons in a day .
Regards John.

Apply for the passport here, The Wye and Usk Foundation. There's plenty to choose from near to your hotel, though their water will keep you occupied. Enjoy.

Cheers guys. The hotel is costing me a bomb it better not dump down with rain! So it's worth venturing beyond the hotel or should I make the most of the hotel's fishing and come back again to fish other places?

I had looked at the Wye and Usk Foundation site but had not noticed the roving voucher scheme. On no more to choose from. A dumb question: I need a W & U Passport for either Rover Voucher or booked beats via the "Booking Office" (online or phone)? I assume so.

The Gliffaes looks nice - fishing that is (I'm less fussed about the hotel than the whiff)

Hi Steve
If you play things right, you will have a ball. A cautionary note though... the Irfon is not a prolific trout stream. It has a great head of grayling and whilst it does hold trout, there are many other beats nearby where you will find many more fish.

I would check out the Edw and Clettwr on the WUF passport, the Usk will be in fine fettle by then as will the streams on the Monnow system - which are are in a different class to anything the Irfon has to offer in terms of trout fishing.

If you want further info, drop me a pm - I am on Easter hols then so happy to help out if I can.
Best
Dave

I will also echo what Tigermoth has said about the amount of trout in the Irfon...patchy to say the least.

The 2 tribs he mentioned (Edw & Clettwr) will definately be worth a visit as long as there is a bit of water in them and assuming you enjoy 'small stream fishing'.

Also the river Wye around Builth can produce plenty of early season sport with the right conditions.

If the fishing isn't up to scratch then you will certainly be in the best place to chill out...the hotel is in a lovely spot.

Sabsman.
