Ended my grayling season with my first trip to Wherwell on the Test. It was a cool day with a nasty downstream breeze which developed after lunch into a nasty downstream wind! Started off upstream nymphing fishing at about 3 rod lengths range with a stren indicator. Picked up fish steadily including a nice grayling of about a pound and a half which was either skillfully tricked by my an induced take....or was a complete fluke grabbing the nymph as I lifted out. I prefer the skill interpretation, it was probably luck.
I found some fast deep water sheltered from the wind by trees and bushes and switched to short nymphing. Bingo!! First cast a 40 cm fish (2lbs?) followed quickly by one af about a pound and a half.
For a change I switched to spiders in the afternoon and picked up another 4 (and lost/missed at least 10, haven't got the hang of this yet).
So, ended uo with 14, a very nice day. Going to let things warm up for a couple of weeks now then time to chase the trout again.
