Default River Tame

Does anybody have any information about the River Tame? The river flows generally south through Delph, Uppermill, Mossley, Stalybridge, Ashton-under-Lyne, Dukinfield, Haughton Green, Denton and Hyde. River Tame, Greater Manchester - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I have been told there are some quality browns in there especially from Mossley down through Stalybridge and on to Ashton and it's not owned by anyone and it's free. Any information that you are willing to share will be truly appreciated...

I'd love to hear how it's fishing these days too. I hear that even the lower reaches are producing good fishing these days, though I don't know about trout. I've caught trout in the pool below the footbridge at Scout Green. I think I would go exploring upstream of Roaches Lock first. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply Steve, when I do finally give it a go I'll let you know where and how I get on. I have been told first hand that there are brownies 2lb+ in the stretch near the abattoir in Ashton-under-Lyne, and I should find fish in the mile or so stretch near where I live from Mossley down through Stalybridge and on to Ashton. Unless I can find somebody to join on the river, I'll have to have a reccy and see where I can get in, park etc. I just don't want to be in there and then be told to clear off because it's private or I'm trespassing.

And thanks for the PM Theo much appreciated!

I've just returned from a reccy on my local river the Tame which runs through Stalybridge. I've never fished this river before with a fly, to be honest I've never fished any river with a fly before. I have trotted maggots and worms through my local stretch many years ago as a youngster and very rarely blanked.
Anyway I had a wonder down to a couple of sections earlier and to my surprise it looks superb and I wished I had taken a rod with me for an hour or so. I plan on going back tomorrow after I've dropped the missus off at work with the tackle this time and having a go.
Whilst I was there I did see 3 rises, but what they were and what they were rising to I couldn't make out from where I was stood, but one of them did look like a quality brown of 2lb+.
I'm keen and eager to learn how to fish a river with fly and now there is nothing to stop me getting a line wet.

Here's a couple of pics I took with my mobile... does it look fishy to you?

In the bottom right picture you can see two rocks to the mid left of the picture, in that little bit of slack water a brownie was holding station with it's head pointing upstream, I watched it dart out into the flow to take something and then it returned back to the slack water, I wish I'd taken the rod!
Oh well it can wait until tomorrow! Wish me look first time out on the river!

Is that top one the pool I mentioned below the footbridge? I would definitely give that a shot! Used to be some good roach in that pool too.

Default River Tame

Hi, I used to fish the river quite a lot before moving from the area 5 years ago. I mainly fished upstream of Mossley towards Greenfield using wet & dry flys as well as small plugs and worms. In all the years i fished the river I never saw anyone else using the fly, often had the river completely to myself. I have to say that the sport was absolutely superb, I nearly always caught, in all conditions with some bumper catches of brown trout including some special ones around the 2-3lb mark. Hope you find this helpful, if you need any other info I will gladly tell you more, Steve.
