Thumbs up Derbyshire Derwent Balsam

We can do some real good here.

Last summer Jan and I noticed a stand of Himalayan Balsam on the Estate, allowed to develop under a negligent tenant. We caught it before seeding and will eradicate the plant on this site over the next couple of years. On a river owned by the Estate and tenanted out; the Derwent at Rowsley, the plant seems to have become endemic.

I proposed a meeting (to be held at my expense) to gather together riparian owners, fishing clubs, wildlife trusts and river keepers from Matlock upstream to the highest point of infestation on the Derwent. A catchment wide programme of mapping and eradication is suggested so we hand over the river to future generations in the same or better state than we found it.

Involved and interested?

Good work, was planning a similar set up on the Dove with Trent Rivers Trust and ourselves,

If you let me know a date Warren I will make sure someone from our end is there, make sure you let PDNPA know as well!

Will do. At the moment I'm trying to wade through all the personal messages of support and promises of help.

Warren - are you after volunteer 'pluckers' or just after reps from owners/clubs/trusts/keepers at this stage.

I don't fish the Derwent catchment regulalry, but will volunteer a couple of days plucking if it's at the weekend.

Same goes for you DM if this extends to The Dove catchment.

Thumbs up

Thanks, there will be a need for manual removal once the site has been mapped. Will be in-touch.

Just joined the forum. The Derwent Fly Fishers in the Hope Valley also have a problem with Himalayan Balsalm and would like to tackle it also. If any meetings are to be held to discuss this I will try to attend.

Default REF

You can count on me I will also put it to REF members and hopefully put a team together, afterall you've been there for us.

Let us know some dates and we'll put those local clubs to shame should they take to hiding
