Default River Itchin

Had another trip to the Itchin, a river I am now starting to appreciate! I hosted a day on the Lugg in June for the WTT auction and the buyer was a chap called Jeff. One of the nice things about the WTT auction is that you meet nice people like Jeff. I invited him along and he made then trip from Essex.

We had a good day and both caught fish. I had 9 of which 6 were grayling. I spent the morning nymphing and picked up 5 then switched to spiders in the afternoon. This isn't a method I'd had much experience with so it took a while to sort out 2 basic problems....(i) keep the rod high so there is a bow in the fly line which is the bite indicator. I initially had too tight a line through to the flies so kept getting sharp takes which of course I missed, and (ii) the swirls about 6 feet from the end of my fly line were actually fish taking the spiders!! Obvious now I think about it. Anyway I picked up 4 fish, missed a lot more and had a whole lot of fun, must do more of this!

I also bumped into Charles Jardine, an absolute gentleman

Some pictures

Regards

Peter

Nice report Peter

That first pic, reminded me of the Avon or Wylye.

Is fishing with spiders a grayling tactic on the Itchen,or is it used throughout the season?

Salisbury club is stricter, not allowing wet flies on premium waters at all.

Not sure Mark, the day ticket for trout is beyond my means!! I'm not experienced with the technique and have a lot still to learn but it was great fun!

Regards

Peter

Hi Peter

A friend of mine uses spiders fishing the Usk and wye and gets some good results. He casts square across, keeping the rod up like you say, then follows them downstream with the rod tip, lifting into knocks etc.Quite good also with a heavy nymph, the spider fishing higher in the water column.

You sound as keen on fly fishing as he is,I'm dusting off the trotting gear now

Regards
