Terrible news.

The fines in these situations are nowhere near punitive enough, the barest of slaps on the wrist compared to the profits turned by the water companies. There have been a couple of cases recently where they have dumped sewage into rivers intentionally to avoid disrupting service to customers - the fines for the latter are obviously far more important that harming the local environment. While that continues incidents like this will occur all too frequently.

Default Rspca?

I don’t recall those vile pieces of useless sh*ite getting involved in river pollutions before. Bet they claim sanctity and plenty of ‘pr’ over their attempts at getting in the way. They don’t have free access over riparian land and I certainly wouldn’t let them anywhere near. They lost any shred of respect I had for them when I found out they put dogs down with a bolt gun. The EA were with me yesterday and went on to a valley without a phone signal to do further work. Their office was desperately trying to get in touch to go to this pollution. The EA fisheries team is a superb bunch of young professionals and I am sure they will be doing their level best down on the Trent today.

Has the pollution entered the gravel pits at Kings Bromley?

rather unsurprisingly i am stuggling to get any more info, will update the thread as i find anything out

just got of the phone, no more specific details, but apparently the EA may need to rethink how many cyanide testing kits they stock!

rspca have done nothing but set river/wetland conservation back round here with their freshwater lobsters, and dont get me started on them releasing a small deer they think are roe into woodland

Yet another river polluted; and we struggle to understand WHY this kind of mindless river vandalism keeps re,occurring time after time!

What is the answer to stopping the stupidity of dumping waste products in to our rivers? Large companies who allow waste of any kind in to our water-ways should be fined far heavier than they are at present! The EA, are under-staffed and sometimes seem very lax in their approach to bringing action against these perpetrators of our river systems!

Maybe we need to be more vigilant as individuals; perhaps better policing by the clubs and associations who use the river systems! The Government could do more in the way of funding the EA and conservation bodies!

I'm saddened by the news of yet another pollution! Such a shame!

Never mind fines, if this turns out to be negligence or recklessness, someone should go to prison for it.

it was my understanding that the newer sewage works had to have mechanisms in place that would shut the plant down in the case of a chemical pollution incident, that has obviously not worked in this case, I dare say there will be a lot of chasing around and finger pointing as to who was at fault, and the fines will be minimal considering the environmental damage that has taken place, there is also the added issue that the salmon run up the Trent in October and this could be a serious blow to the reintroduction efforts over the last few years

it is my understanding this is supposed to happen in an emergency. at the end of the day would you rather the cyanide was in the human water supply or the fishes?

I Agree! But Who? from a large company; The buck stops here -MD, or the guy in the plant who did or didn't throw the switch that allowed pollutants in to the river?

Difficult!
