Default Who Let Our River Down?

Hi guys
Yesterday I spent the day viewing the weirs of the lower Yorkshire Calder with fish passage and the WFD in mind.
What a mixed bunch of emotions one can have in a single day!

FRUSTRATION:
[Click the image to open in full size.

A wholly redundant weir that was a prime candidate for some well placed dynamite.....and now is the subject for planning consent to re -build the weir for a hydro application.....THE REASON WHY!...its owned on both banks by BW so would be 'easier' than choosing a weir that was still deemed essential to navigation.

ELATION:
[Click the image to open in full size.]

A resounding success story and a round of applause for Castleford....both fish and Eel can pass this weir that was officially opened a few months ago.(Eel and Lamprey pass is the narrower mesh topped tunnel on the right)

WTF!

The grey building, with its feet IN the water,is still being built as we speak......its a flagship building of massive regional importance...and as ugly as sin (they should not be paid in washers for this eyesore).
Originally the plans had a fish pass proposed......then the EA guy steering this 'left'.......instead of a pass......you can just make out the brand new banking they have constructed. FOR GODS SAKE...they had the machinery in the water and the materials on site.......it could have been a feature in this public building...... and the most beautiful thing about it.

WHAT CHANCE NOW to dig the road up a second time ...........????

Aye up!

The banking? In the corner of the weir I can see some earth works. What significance has this got to the project. O' wait, I think I understand. The owners of the new building weren't obligated to install a pass, just that the plant was on site and one could have been constructed anyway. I am afraid you need common sense and a free hand and budget to get cracking on a project that runs alongside another. The best at this type of thing are farmers. Some of them can kill a whole flock of birds with one stone. Very posh pass at Castleford.
