Does anyone have information on this river in North Anglesey. I have been invited to fish it next week but the owner has little idea of what species could be targetted. Sea trout is one supposition.

Thanks.

I've never fished the river in question but rivers of a similar size a little further round to the west have a run of sewin (sea trout) and I would think that apart from native browns you have a good chance of finding them. I can't think that there would be much else in that river apart from bass and mullet around the tidal area in Cemaes Bay.

I've shot on land adjoining this very small river - both 'Mynachdu' and the 'Lobster Pot'.
I didn't think it worthy of fishing, certainly nothing was mentioned by my host who then fished on the mainland. A good hour's drive for him.

I did hear tales of locals spearing sea trout by lamplight in November, but that may have been on the adjacent Alaw. Sorry not to be more positive.

Thanks although I am sorry to hear prospects are limited. I'll still go out, naturally. The local method is intrguing. I'll brush up on my Welsh and nip to the pub on Friday evening to see if I can obtain appropriate tools!

Hmmm... an interesting little stream. I remember seeing otters on the Wygyr as a child. Where there are otters, there be fish... in good numbers. The river flows down from the old Parys Mountain mining complex and there is still a fair bit of mineralisation in the area. I reckon you may find a few browns and earlier in the year you might expect to see a sewin. There are plenty of mullet in the brackish part of the river. The whole thing is barely six miles long. Good luck... let us know what you find.

Default Wygyr report

Fished the Brynddu beat of the Wygyr from Carog towards Cemaes for a mile or so. No success, partly because the water is so cloudy, I suspect. A 6' rod would have given much more chance I think as overhanging trees and bankside vegetation (the EA have fenced stock out of a riparian zone) made access diffiult in places. I would also like to know BOD: I suspect it may be above moderate levels.

The stream is now managed by a 25 member Mechell and Wygyr Association who have put about 100 brownies in pa for, I think, the last couple of years.

An officer of the assoc reported a sewin on last year's October run. He also recollected a story of poachers spearing fish by moonlight (although another thought that romanticised). The owner was more certain that there was contrversy over large scale netting at Cemaes Bay after the war. His father thought that did for the viabilty of the Wygyr as a sewin water. Hopefully the tide has now turned.
